I posted a couple of thoughts on this recently as well. I too am
working on an animation with this type of idea!
My final question (still relatively new - less than a year) about
this....how much can be resolved using texture velocities to create
a continuous background?
I sort of envisioned the 3d CGI equivalent of the scrolling backdrops
used in the old silent film westerns!
Could also be done by hand with a sequence of images if need be.
